Week Two Personal Post

My tech experience over this six-day, cold weather weekend consisted of plusportals emails to my students each day, reminding them to stay on pace with our reading schedule.

For six years, I've been having my students complete and submit reading notes through our school email.  I like doing this because it lets me track each students engagement in the text and capacity for close reading and application.  However, record-keeping problem this system creates sometimes makes extra work for students and/or myself when the records aren’t kept well.

I've developed a consistent culture of expectations that helps them and me deal with errors patiently, but it does occasoinaly cost students and myself more time than it should.

But I know I should be using an app like Showbie or Schoology to manage this kind of work, but I am afraid to try one or the other for fear of choosing poorly.  I’d love to hear if anyone who reads this has experience with either app, and how well either allows for relatively convenient feedback for daily submissions?

I’ll be excited to hear from you, and grateful for any input.

Have a great week!

  1. It sounds as if you are ready to use a Learning Management System (Showbie or Schoology or Moodle, or Canvas, or Edmodo) rather than just plain email. I would recommend you get a free account at Canvas. I found it to be the simplest to learn on the fly. If you need assistance setting up your portal, let me know.
